Passage of Senate Bill 5: First Round of Attack on Ohio Workers?

Here in Ohio, the attack by Republicans on unionized public employees moved forward, despite two massive rallies about a week apart on the doorsteps of the Ohio Legislature in Columbus. Concerned Local 880 members twice made the long trek to Columbus to show their support for their brothers and sisters employed in the public sector.

It's important to understand that the attack on the collective bargaining rights of public sector employees is just domino #1. If it falls, it will threaten the rights and gains of workers in the private sector as well. It will threaten you, your contract and your benefits.

It's time that we all must all stand up for what is right and what is fair. It's absolutely critical that every union member resist the effort to blame organized labor for the financial crisis facing the state and our nation. Workers who earn a fair wage and have fair benefits because of their union contracts are not the problem ─ they are part of the solution.

There is much to do and very little time to do it. SB5 narrowly passed. The battle lines have been clearly drawn. It's up to every worker to get out and protect our jobs and our livelihoods. In short, we must protect our right to negotiate that we won’t be forced to beg later on.
